Monet inspires Mendel
The renowned gardens located at the residence of Impressionist artist Claude Monet, have delighted visitors for many years and have now inspired the fresh colour palette of J.Mendel’s Spring RTW 19 collection.
Claude Monet resided at Giverny, France for forty three years of his life, a village that housed his first studio and a flower and water garden, which he considered to be works of art in itself.
Renowned as the father of the Impressionist movement, his keen interest for gardening isn’t always mentioned in the history books. However, Monet drew inspiration from his gardens which became the subjects of some of his paintings, so it seems only fitting that another creative has also taken stimulus from the same botanicals.
The J.Mendel Spring RTW 19 collection not only captures the hues of the garden, but uses fabrics and details that showcase the colours through Monet’s perspective.
Creative director Gilles Mendel fuses these spring colours with 70’s silhouettes to create a dreamy, light and elegant collection with fabrics that looked like they could have been painted by Monet himself.
Shades of mint, citrus, peach and lavender provide a soft colour palette to complement the overlay of metallic brush strokes that appear to dance in the light.
On some pieces, fine embroidery and beading have been used to create gatherings of delicate floral arrangements
Tiered tulle dresses mimic the layers of a flower, while silk chiffon ruffles are used repeatedly throughout the collection to emulate the movement of water.
As art and fashion do often coalesce, this is not the first time Mendel has been inspired by an artist. It was only in June this year that Henri Matisse’s ‘Joy of Life’ painting was hanging on the J.Mendel mood board for his Resort 2019 collection.
I’m sure couture connoisseurs can admire the essence of Impressionist painting that J.Mendel has instilled in this collection, and fans of Monet can appreciate the tribute to the artists’ unique style.
